Jonathan Duan

Pianist

A native of Qingdao, China, Jonathan Duan began his piano studies at the age of four under the guidance of Enoch Chang. His early musical journey has been marked by numerous prestigious awards and achievements, including first place at the Great China Area Youth Arts Festival in 2007; Second place in the Internationaler Deutscher Irmler-Klavierwettbewerb in 2013; First place of the Dandelion national competition; Selective Activity for Youngsters’ Outstanding Artistic in in the same year sponsored by Srik Du. In 2015, Jonathan moved to the United States to further his education in English. Since then, he has studied piano with renowned instructors including Akiko Turley, Dr. Erikson Rojas, Lotus Cheng, and Susan Starr. He completed his Bachelor of Music degree at Palm Beach Atlantic University, where he studied under Dr. Erikson Rojas.

Throughout his career, Jonathan has earned several notable honors, including the inaugural Samuel Hsu Piano Scholarship, an invitation to the Csehy Chamber Music Festival, Platinum Alternate in the 2017 Young Classical Virtuosos Competition, the Crane International Piano Festival Honored Scholarship, an invitation to the 164th International Birthday Celebration of Steinway & Sons, and first place in the Newark Symphony Orchestra Competition. In 2019, he performed Grieg’s A minor Piano Concerto with the Csehy Youth Orchestra. Jonathan’s academic achievements also include acceptance to both the Eastman School of Music and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University in 2020.

Jonathan was awarded first prize in the 2021 Sylvia Brainen Piano Competition, further solidifying his reputation as a rising talent. He has had the privilege of working with world-renowned musicians such as Yundi Li, Jin Zhang, Eleanor Sokoloff, Alan Chow, Misha Dichter, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Alex Kobrin, Marian Hann, Emmanuel Ax, and Naoko Takao, etc.

Looking ahead, Jonathan has been invited to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with Hongxi Li for the doctoral recital in 2024. He is deeply grateful for the guidance and blessings he has received, attributing his success to the mercy of the Lord, and remains committed to honoring God through his musical journey.
